If eligible, from 1 July 2009 Australian residents can claim the Education Tax Refund for eligible education spending from 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009. This means you could get 50% back on a range of primary and secondary school education expenses.

Education Tax Refund

The Education Tax Refund (ETR) is a new government initiative to help with the cost of educating primary and secondary school children. It means eligible parents, carers, legal guardians and independent students could get 50% back on some education expenses. This includes items like computers, educational software, textbooks and stationery.

How to claim

Education Tax Refund can be claimed as a part of your 2008-2009 tax return. If you don’t need to lodge a tax return this year, you can still claim using a separate form or even over the phone.

The Education Tax Refund lets you claim up to 50% of eligible education expenses for school children. You can claim refund for text books, stationary and even the Internet costs.
