Stress can be caused by a number of factors and may be different for different people. The symptoms can be hard to detect, as the symptoms are often easily confused with other issues. One really good way to reduce stress, that doesn’t cost a lot of money, is by putting together jigsaw puzzles, whether they are 1500 piece puzzles, 500 piece jigsaw puzzles or uniquely shaped jigsaw puzzles offer their own challenges.
Stress is usually due to factors we have no control over, like a needed car or house repair that breaks the budget, or you may not have the money to pay for. At work there may be a co-worker who doesn’t carry their weight, difficult people with their own agendas that you need to work around, or maybe a project with a due date that is looming. The kids may be getting into trouble at school, or worse. 
Stress can affect the body in many different ways, some obvious; others may not be detected until they are more severe. Stress weakens the immune system, which may result in being sick more often. Tension headaches, sleeplessness, general anxiety, feelings of frustration and irritability can all be symptoms of too much stress.
When you’ve had a chance to take your mind off of a problem or issue, you can get a whole new perspective. You can see the issue more objectively. Maybe it’s not as bad as you thought. Maybe it is as bad as you thought, but you can think clearer to find a solution.
Games, such as jigsaw puzzles, that are intellectually stimulating take your mind off of what is causing your stress. When your mind is off of the stressor, you loosen up. You begin to relax. It can take you back to a time when you enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles when you didn’t have a care in the world — when you were a child. They can be done while watching TV or listening to the radio. You can work on them as much or as little as you want, as they don’t need to be done in one sitting. They can be done alone, or you can make it a family project. The sense of accomplishment and achievement you feel when a jigsaw puzzle is complete can be hard to come by in our hectic day-to-day lives. You may even want to frame it and hang it on the wall; or, you can take it apart to put it all back together another day.
If you are a beginner, you may want to start out with a 100-piece jigsaw puzzle. You don’t want to start with a 1500 piece puzzle as it might be too challenging and turn you off of jigsaw puzzles for good! A 500-piece jigsaw should be a good place to start if you’ve done puzzles as a child. There are many different types of puzzles to suit young and old alike. Uniquely shaped jigsaw puzzles offer a fun twist to the traditional rectangle shaped puzzles.
No matter what stressors you have in your life, no matter which symptoms you are experiencing; putting together jigsaw puzzles can be a great way to relax and let it all go.
