In the entire world, the mystery of the function of nature has been on the minds of human beings since the beginning of time. At first, early scientists came upon recognizing that the human body had nearly the same chemistry as the animals they were so adamant about researching. Of course, it was to be denied we had anything to do with the lower forms of life on this planet, that we were a glorious invention set apart from other biological forms.
After much consideration, the truth had to be faced by the scientists trying to figure life out. We, as the higher form of life on earth, had similar body fluids and biological systems as some of the life forms on the planet. Since those life forms were already being studied successfully, it could only follow that the human body could be studied the same way.

A pig had kidneys, and they functioned as kidneys, removing waste form the blood as it circulated through the pig’s body. This blood was analysed from healthy porcines, thus giving scientists an idea of what the levels should be. Transferring the testing procedure to humans, who also had kidneys, was found so beneficial, it opened the eyes and minds of physicians to develop tests for humans.
It was found that human beings had normal levels and ranges for each of the blood chemistry constituents. Levels going outside the range of the norm was an indicator of different, soon to be discovered, diseases. This was a diagnosticians dream, simply testing the blood for the different parameters that make up a healthy human being.
The blood constituents of animals in the lab nearly coincided with human body functions, so each type of test, from glucose to bilirubin, was simply standardized for human beings. Clinical analytical chemistry became the cornerstone of the new field of medical laboratory.
