It is a known fact that during the times of financial downturn and economic depression, people re-think their career and turn back to universities for further study. To get an extra qualification is never too late, and as well as improving people’s career prospects, formal education is also good for people’s health. Stepping outside of the comfort zone, and thinking outside of the box is a very healthy brain exercise.
Going back to university no longer requires attendance at each lecture and being physically present in class. With the evolution of high speed internet, most universities now offer education courses fully online. There is a good chance that whatever course you are considering now, is available online at one of the universities in the world. Yes, in the world! The internet has made it possible to attend universities in other countries, thus widening your worldview even further.
So, what is online education? Don’t be put out by the word “onlineâ€, whatever the study mode is, the amount of knowledge that you get will depend on your diligence in reading and thinking about the course material. Online education has the same deadlines for course start and finish, and the same requirements for all assessments.
Normally, after enrolling in a course, the university forwards all the details to students by email. Students receive information on how to login to an “electronic blackboardâ€, how to access discussion groups and all the details about assessments that students need to know. Students also receive a study plan for the semester that outlines the reading requirements and the due dates for assessments.
Online students are expected to read weekly material and discuss it in online forums with other students. These forums are moderated by the unit lecturer, who will intervene and clarify whatever points need attention. When contributing to the discussions, students are expected to share their business experience and refer to other academic material that is relevant to that week’s topic.
Assignment topics are usually given out ahead of time and students are given good lead time for preparation. Often, even assignment questions are discussed and therefore students have a good feel as to what is required from them. Once completed, these assignments are submitted online or emailed directly to the unit coordinator, who gets back to student later with the results and comprehensive feedback.
Studying online is for everyone – not only for young people. The internet makes it very fast, efficient and easy for people of all ages. It provides a valuable opportunity to further one’s career and thus improve employment prospects. Make sure you contact your local university for further information on online education.
