Okinawa (known as “Ryukyu” to the locals) is one of the most unique and undiscovered places in Asia to visit. While there are many tourists, there are also those that like to do more than just visit the region. They come to spend a significant amount of time, to really experience the culture, and in doing so, inevitably have to find employment. One might wonder if there are any available opportunities for foreigners in such an unknown place. However, there are a number of great opportunities available. The following are possible ways to earn a living in the land of Okinawa:
Teaching English remains the most popular job for travelers to this region. English remains the language of international business, which is why it’s vital for many in non-English speaking countries to develop a functional skill in speaking it. This results in there being many opportunities for those with basic teaching skills to land a teaching contract there. Contracts are generally for 1 year in duration, and provide a decent salary considering the amount of contact hours involved.
As Okinawa is located on the ocean, obviously there are many resort opportunities around the islands. Foreigners who speak at least a little Japanese will be able to secure various positions at hotels / resorts, working anywhere from the hotel restaurant, to being a lifeguard patrolling the beaches. Those with specialized skills such as scuba diving instruction may be able to find opportunities available, since the scuba scene in Okinawa is popular year-round. There are also many other beachside service jobs that can be undertaken, such as bar work etc. Since Okinawa is a highly visited tourist area, there are generally employment opportunities year-round, but by far the most opportunities become available between the months of June – September, which is peak season in Okinawa.
Working in Okinawa in the Summer will most certainly be a unique cultural experience. It is a time when Japanese from all over Japan come to enjoy the sun, ocean, and Okinawa lifestyle, which is renowned for being the most relaxed in Japan. No matter what type of job you wish to do while you’re there, you should always make sure that you have the proper visa to work there, have an interest in the Japanese culture and language, and a sound work ethic and positive attitude.
